As a girl from Portland, OregonāI cannot explain the significance of Salt & Straw on the arc of my childhood and teenage-hood. Now I live in New York, and I ran into Hudson Street Salt & Straw a few weeks ago with a childlike excitement for the best ice cream ever: Julyās Blackberries and Birthday Cake. The employees were nice but met my Portland pride/nostalgia with mild indifference. What they didnāt understand was that scoop was a taste of homeāmy friends, family, dumb teenage decisions, 16 year old crushes, middle school sweet treat dates with my mom. I better go get another scoop before August comes around.
